Build Your Own Rain Barrel Workshop @ EMS Training Building

Join with others to learn the benefits of harvesting gallons of rain water from your rooftop!  The Lexington Countywide Stormwater Consortium is hosting a “Build Your Own Rain Barrel” Workshop consisting of a class held at the Emergency Medical Services training building on Ball Park Road in Lexington, SC followed by a hands-on group rain barrel making session at Lexington County Public Works. You will make your own rain barrel like the one in the photo to take home and start collecting rain water for uses such as watering plants, cleaning a vehicle, tools, your pet or your feet!  Using rain water can also save you money on your water bill as well as reducing pollutants in our waterways.  The class holds 25 participants, and you can be among them by clicking on the flyer below and filling out the registration form and sending in a $25.00 check to cover the cost of supplies.  Please check on space availability first by sending an email to [email protected]

Recycle Your Used Christmas Tree This Year during Grinding of the Greens! @ Various locations and times beginning 12/26/18 - 1/10/19 in Lexington and Richland Counties

This year take your used Christmas Tree to from December 26, 2018 – January 10, 2019 to one of 23 different locations in Lexington and Richland Counties to have it turned into Mulch.  This recycling event, Grinding of the Greens,  is sponsored by Keep the Midlands Beautiful. 

On January 12, pick up the free mulch beginning at 8:30 a.m. from the SC Farmers’ Market or Seven Oaks Park.

January 19 Recycling & Hazardous Waste Collection in Pelion, SC @ Forts Pond Elementary School

Recycle paper and electronics and safely dispose of household hazardous waste (HHW).  This event will be held, rain or shine, but details are subject to change.  Go to the Lexington County Solid Waste Management web page on the County website or the “County of Lexington” Facebook  page or call (803) 755-3325 to confirm details before loading up your items for drop off.

Limits on items are as follows:  Up to 5 boxes/bags of paper, up to 8 electronics (small items and computer components are bundled to count as “one”).   At HHW collections, up to 8 gallons of liquid paint will be accepted.     There are no limits on other HHW items.

A Lexington County recycling event will be held at Batesburg-Leesville High School on Saturday, March 23 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for Lexington County residents (no businesses).  Items being collected for recycling are:

Paper to be shredded onsite (up to 5 bags or boxes only)

Electronics (up to 8 electronic items [small items and computer components are bundled to count as one item]).

Tires (no limit)

Herb Festival at the Lexington County Museum Celebrates 8 Years! @ Lexington County Museum

50th Anniversary of Peach Tree Rock Nature Preserve @ Peach Tree Rock Nature Preserve

Peach Tree Rock Heritage Preserve at comprises 460 acres in Lexington County and is co-managed by the S.C. Chapter of the Nature Conservancy (TNC).  The Preserve is a native long leaf pine forest that includes a 2.4 mile loop trail and features a waterfall.  The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, nature trips, bird watching and is accessible year-round.

On Saturday, April 27th, a 50th anniversary celebration of the Nature Preserve will be held from 10:00 a.m.—2:00 p.m.  This family friendly event features guided hikes, activities for children and displays by local Conservation groups.  The Lexington Countywide Stormwater Consortium will have a table display with SWAG (stuff we all get) for those who visit and learn about water quality.
