The Lexington Countywide Stormwater Consortium will staff a table where you can register for a chance to win a rain barrel. Come and learn about rain harvesting using a rain barrel!  In addition, there will be giveaway items at the table to help you remember more ways you can help reduce pollution that enters our waterways.   Come and see what you are already doing to contribute to the health of our beautiful Midlands waterways and learn easy new ways to  help.

A recycling drop-off event will be held at Riverbanks Zoo and Gardens for residents of Richland and Lexington Counties on Saturday, February 29 from 9:00 a.m – 1:00 p.m.  Enter the Event using the Main Entrance – To the left before railroad tracks.

NOTE:  Materials from businesses will NOT be accepted at this event.  Appliances containing Freon will NOT be accepted at this event.

MATERIALS ACCEPTED:

• Electronics (Up to 8 electronic items will be accepted.  Small items and computer components may be bundled and count as 1 item.)
• Paper (Up to 5 boxes or bags of paper will be accepted for shredding onsite.)
• Scrap metal
• Tires (Up to 8 tires will be accepted)
• Cooking oil
• Goodwill donations (a Goodwill truck will be there to take the donations).

The Town of Irmo will host a “Build Your Own Rain Barrel” workshop on Friday, March 20, 2020 from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.   The workshop begins with check-in at 8:45 a.m. at the Town of Irmo Municipal Building located at 7300 Woodrow Street.  Representatives from the Lexington Countywide Stormwater Consortium will present information on stormwater runoff, rainwater harvesting and how to make a rain barrel before helping each attendee to build one to take home.

Pre-registration for this workshop is required.  The cost to attend the workshop and make a rain barrel is $30.00.  To register, contact Mary Hite, Stormwater Outreach Assistant, Lexington County Community Development at (803) 785-8121 or by email to [email protected] .    Space is limited to the first 25 paid registrants.

4. Tires (up to 8 per household)

This event is co-sponsored by the County of Lexington, Keep the Midlands Beautiful and high school students from Batesburg-Leesville.

Lexington County and Richland County residents are invited to this recycling  drop-off  event.  Items from businesses will not be accepted at this event.  They must be brought to their county landfill.

The following items will be collected:

• Tires (up to 8 tires per vehicle)
• Scrap Metal
• Household Goods
• Paper (up to 5 boxes or bags can be shredded onsite)
• Electronics (up to 8 items per vehicle, but small items and computer components that are bundled count as “one”.)
• Household Hazardous Waste (up to 8 gallons of liquid paint per vehicle is allowed).  No explosives, ammunition, medical waste, pharmaceutical, sharps/needles, or radioactive waste (includes smoke detectors) are allowed.

Residents are asked to  stay in their vehicles for safety and efficiency while staff unload materials.  Masks are strongly encouraged.

HHW Drop-Off events listed in the flyer below are open to Lexington County residents only.  Mark your calendar this Spring with the dates in the flyer beginning on Saturday, February 6, to bring a wide variety of hazardous materials to the locations listed in the flyer.  These items are collected by EcoFlo, a hazardous waste disposal company, for proper handling and disposal.  The flyer provides a list of materials accepted and what you need to know when preparing to take your household hazardous waste (HHW) to any of the drop offs listed in the flyer.

Please note that the April 17th HHW Drop-Off Event is the only one of the four spring events that will be held at the Collection and Recycling Center, 103 Distant Ln. Chapin, rather than at EcoFlo.

• Tires (up to 8 per household, rims are ok)
• Cooking oil (no limit)

NOTE:  Paint of other household hazardous waste (HHW) will NOT be collected at this event.  Please check Upcoming Events on this website for HHW drop-off events.

Batesburg-Leesville High School will tentatively host a Recycling Drop Off Event for Lexington County Residents on Saturday, April 24 from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.  This will be a drive-through event in the school parking lot on Summerland Avenue.  Materials generated by businesses will NOT be accepted.
